Who actually owns your Shopify store? (And how to transfer it)
Every Shopify store has exactly one store owner — a single login that outranks every staff account. The owner controls the plan, the billing, the payment setup, and the ability to hand the store to anyone else. Staff can run the whole shop day to day, which is why nobody notices when the owner login belongs to the freelancer who set the store up, or a co-founder who left in 2023.
The day you need to change payout details, respond to a billing problem, or remove a user, the owner login is the only one that can. Here's how to check yours and fix it — using Shopify's official transfer flow.
Check who the owner is (two minutes)
In the Shopify admin, open Settings → Users. The store owner is listed separately at the top, above staff. If that name is a departed employee, an agency, or a personal email of any kind, put this on today's list.
Transfer store ownership, step by step
- 1Make sure the new owner is a user firstOwnership can only be transferred to someone who already has a user account on the store — invite them (use a company mailbox like store@yourbusiness.com) and have them accept before you start.
- 2Current owner opens Settings → UsersOnly the current store owner can do the transfer — there's no admin override inside the product.
- 3Select Transfer ownershipIn the store-owner section, choose the new owner, enter the current owner's password to confirm, and complete the transfer. It takes effect immediately.
- 4Update the store's contact emailsCheck Settings → Store details afterwards — the account and sender email addresses don't change automatically, and Shopify's own notices will keep going to the old address until you fix them.
If the owner is unreachable
No password reset gets you the owner login if it points at an inbox you can't access. Contact Shopify Support directly and be ready to prove the business is yours — billing records for the store's charges, the registered business details, the domain. Expect a verification process rather than an instant fix; it exists precisely because store ownership controls the money.
Set it up so this never bites you
- The store owner is a company-owned login on a shared mailbox — never a person's personal email, never a contractor.
- Agencies and developers get collaborator access (that's what it's for) or a staff account — they can do their entire job without owning your store.
- At least two people can reach the owner mailbox and its two-step verification.
- Payout bank details and the billing card are the company's, reviewed whenever anyone senior leaves.
The free scan maps your domain, email, cloud, social and tools from public records — and shows what you'd lose access to tomorrow. No login, nothing to install.
